Seit mehr als zwei Jahrhunderten wird die Fotografie eingesetzt, um die Welt um uns herum zu erfassen. Seit ihren Anfängen war sie ein Werkzeug zur Erkundung, das dem Betrachter Teile der Welt zeigte, die zuvor unerreichbar waren.

Als Medium lebt die Fotografie von unserem Wunsch, mehr zu sehen und mehr zu wissen: ein Drang, den die meisten von uns heute durch unsere unersättliche Beschäftigung mit Bildern in den sozialen Medien stillen, wo ferne Länder und Menschen auf der anderen Seite der Erde mit einem Mausklick erreichbar sind. Was bedeutet es in diesem globalisierten und hochdigitalen Moment, zu "reisen", und welche unbekannten Welten können wir mit Hilfe der Fotografie sehen?

In dieser Ausgabe des Belfast Photo Festival untersuchen wir, wie Künstler in der heutigen Zeit die Idee der "Reise" als Thema der Kunst interpretieren. Das Festival zeigt Projekte, die sich diesem jahrhundertealten Thema aus neuen und überraschenden Blickwinkeln nähern: Werke, die globale Unruhen aufzeichnen, epische Pilgerreisen nachzeichnen, den Lauf der Zeit erforschen, ungeschriebene Geschichten aufzeichnen und Selbstfindungsreisen dokumentieren, die den Blick eher nach innen als nach außen richten.

In Anlehnung an die lange Geschichte der Fotografie, die unsere Welt in Bildern festhält, folgen wir in dieser Ausgabe des Festivals Fotografen, die uns auf Reisen durch eine Vielzahl von Orten, Geschichten und Perspektiven führen.

Depuis plus de deux siècles, la photographie est utilisée pour capturer le monde qui nous entoure. Dès ses débuts, elle a été un outil d'exploration, présentant aux spectateurs des parties du monde jusque-là inaccessibles.

En tant que médium, la photographie se nourrit de notre désir d'en voir plus et d'en savoir plus : un désir que la plupart d'entre nous nourrissent aujourd'hui par notre engagement insatiable avec les images sur les médias sociaux, où des terres lointaines et des personnes de l'autre côté de la terre sont accessibles d'un simple clic sur un bouton. À l'heure de la mondialisation et du tout numérique, que signifie "voyager" et quels mondes inconnus la photographie nous permet-elle de découvrir ?

Cette édition du Belfast Photo Festival explore la manière dont les artistes contemporains interprètent l'idée du "voyage" en tant que sujet artistique. Le festival présente des projets qui abordent cette préoccupation séculaire sous des angles nouveaux et surprenants : des œuvres qui tracent les vagues mondiales de troubles civils, retracent des pèlerinages épiques, explorent le passage du temps, cartographient des histoires non écrites et font la chronique de voyages de découverte personnelle qui regardent vers l'intérieur plutôt que vers l'extérieur.

S'inspirant de la longue histoire de la photographie, qui consiste à capturer notre monde à travers des images, cette édition du festival suit des photographes qui nous emmènent dans des voyages à travers une variété de lieux, d'histoires et de perspectives.

Per oltre due secoli la fotografia è stata utilizzata per catturare il mondo che ci circonda. Fin dalle sue origini, è stata uno strumento di esplorazione, mostrando agli spettatori parti del mondo prima irraggiungibili.

Come mezzo di comunicazione, la fotografia si nutre del nostro desiderio di vedere di più e di conoscere di più: un desiderio che la maggior parte di noi oggi alimenta attraverso l'insaziabile impegno con le immagini sui social media, dove terre lontane e persone dall'altra parte della terra sono raggiungibili con un semplice clic. In questo momento globalizzato e altamente digitale, cosa significa "viaggiare" e quali mondi sconosciuti ci permette di vedere la fotografia?

In questa edizione del Belfast Photo Festival esploriamo il modo in cui gli artisti contemporanei interpretano l'idea del "viaggio" come soggetto artistico. Il festival presenta progetti che affrontano questa preoccupazione secolare da angolazioni nuove e sorprendenti: opere che tracciano le ondate globali di disordini civili, ripercorrono epici pellegrinaggi, esplorano il passare del tempo, tracciano storie non scritte e raccontano viaggi alla scoperta di se stessi che guardano all'interno piuttosto che al mondo.

Prendendo spunto dalla lunga storia della fotografia di catturare il nostro mondo attraverso le immagini, in questa edizione del festival seguiamo i fotografi mentre ci guidano in un viaggio attraverso una varietà di luoghi, storie e prospettive.

For over two centuries, photography has been used to capture the world around us. From its beginnings, it has been a tool for exploration, showcasing to viewers parts of the world that had previously been unreachable.

As a medium, photography thrives off our desire to see more and to know more: an urge most of us now feed through our insatiable engagement with images on social media, where far off lands and people on the other side of the earth are reachable at the click of a button. In this globalised and highly digital moment, what does it mean to ‘journey’, and what unknown worlds does photography specifically allow us to see?

This edition of Belfast Photo Festival, we explore how artists in the contemporary moment are interpreting the idea of the ‘journey’ as a subject of art. The festival features projects that approach this centuries old preoccupation from new and surprising angles: from works that chart global surges in civil unrest; re-trace epic pilgrimages; explore the passage of time; map out unwritten histories; and chronicle journeys of self-discovery that look inward rather than out at the world.

Riffing off of photography’s long history of capturing our world through images, this edition of the festival we follow photographers as they lead us on journeys through a variety of places, histories, and perspectives.
