Gian Paolo Barbieri: Beyond Fashion

Dem Meister, der die Geschichte der zeitgenössischen Mode- und Kostümfotografie geprägt hat, widmen das House of Lucie Ostuni und die Lucie Awards die Retrospektive "Gian Paolo Barbieri: Beyond Fashion", die in Zusammenarbeit mit der Gian Paolo Barbieri Foundation und der Galerie 29 Arts In Progress in Mailand vom 5. Juli bis 31. August 2024 stattfindet.

Neben zahlreichen Meisterwerken Barbieris werden auch einige bisher unveröffentlichte Fotografien ausgestellt, die von den 1960er bis in die 2000er Jahre reichen und das Ergebnis einer eingehenden Recherche im Archiv des Künstlers sind.

Gian Paolo Barbieri ist es gelungen, der italienischen Mode ein einzigartiges Gesicht zu geben, das sich bis dahin niemand vorstellen konnte. Er wurde zum Komplizen und Begleiter jener Stylisten, die mit dem Aufkommen des Made in Italy zu den Protagonisten einer neuen Ära von Kostüm und Mode werden sollten.

An ihrer Seite interpretiert er die schönste Saison dieses neuen Aufschwungs. In der Ausstellung wechseln sich intime und spontane Aufnahmen von Models und Prominenten wie Veruschka, Naomi Campbell, Marpessa, Eva Herzigova, Monica Bellucci, Mina und Isabella Rossellini mit ikonischen Fotografien (darunter Audrey Hepburn im Jahr 1969) ab, die Barbieri für einige der legendärsten Werbekampagnen italienischer und internationaler Modemarken wie Versace, Ferrè, Vivienne Westwood, Dolce & Gabbana, Valentino und Armani konzipiert hat.

Aber die Ausstellung bietet dem Publikum auch innovative Bilder in Bezug auf Kulissen und Styling, die das Ergebnis des unverkennbaren Einfallsreichtums des Künstlers sind: eine ironische und gleichzeitig kultivierte, raffinierte und provokative Fotografie, reich an Bezügen zur Kunstgeschichte, eklektischen Außenkulissen an exotischen Orten und Filmzitaten, ein Echo seiner jugendlichen Erfahrung im Cinecittà in Rom.

Aus seiner Sicht ist Mode ohne Kunst nackt und leer.

Und die Frauen auf den ausgestellten Bildern sind für diesen Anlass von den kanonischen Posen der Modefotografie befreit, um zu den Sprecherinnen einer neuen unkonventionellen Eleganz zu werden, die ihre lässigere und sinnlichere Seite offenbart.

Barbieri - Gewinner des Lucie Award 2018 als bester internationaler Modefotograf (Outstanding Achievement in Fashion) - ist ein wertvoller Fotograf, immer: in der studierten Beleuchtung und auch kalibriert, durch seine alte Vertrautheit mit Kino und Theater, im Make-up, in der bewegungslosen Aufhängung der Posen.

Gian Paolo Barbieri fasziniert, verunsichert, berührt das Herz und den Geist des Betrachters.

Und das ist auch die Funktion der Fotografie und, im weiteren Sinne, der Kunst.

Au maître qui a marqué l'histoire de la photographie de mode et de costume contemporaine, House of Lucie Ostuni et The Lucie Awards dédient " Gian Paolo Barbieri : Beyond Fashion ", une rétrospective réalisée en collaboration avec la Gian Paolo Barbieri Foundation et la galerie 29 Arts In Progress à Milan, du 5 juillet au 31 août 2024.

Outre de nombreux chefs-d'œuvre de Barbieri, des photographies inédites seront également exposées, allant des années 1960 aux années 2000, fruit de recherches approfondies menées dans les archives de l'artiste.

Gian Paolo Barbieri a réussi à donner un visage unique à la mode italienne, que personne n'avait encore pu imaginer, en devenant le complice et le compagnon de ces stylistes que l'avènement du Made in Italy allait transformer en protagonistes d'une nouvelle ère du costume et de la mode.

À leurs côtés, il interprète la plus belle saison de cette nouvelle effervescence. Dans l'exposition, des clichés intimes et spontanés de mannequins et de célébrités telles que Veruschka, Naomi Campbell, Marpessa, Eva Herzigova, Monica Bellucci, Mina, Isabella Rossellini alternent avec des photographies iconiques (dont Audrey Hepburn en 1969) que Barbieri a conçues pour certaines des campagnes publicitaires les plus légendaires de marques de mode italiennes et internationales telles que Versace, Ferrè, Vivienne Westwood, Dolce & Gabbana, Valentino et Armani.

Mais l'exposition propose également au public des images innovantes en termes de décors et de style, fruit de l'ingéniosité incontestable de l'artiste : une photographie ironique et en même temps cultivée, raffinée et provocante, riche en références à l'histoire de l'art, en décors extérieurs éclectiques dans des lieux exotiques et en citations cinématographiques, écho de son expérience de jeunesse à Cinecittà, à Rome.

De son point de vue, en effet, la mode sans art est nue et vide.

Et ici, les femmes des images exposées sont libérées pour l'occasion des poses plus canoniques de la photographie de mode, pour devenir les porte-parole d'une nouvelle élégance non conventionnelle qui révèle leur côté plus décontracté et sensuel.

Barbieri - lauréat en 2018 du Lucie Award en tant que meilleur photographe de mode international (Outstanding Achievement in Fashion) - est un photographe précieux, toujours : dans l'éclairage étudié et aussi calibré, grâce à son ancienne familiarité avec le cinéma et le théâtre, dans le maquillage, dans la suspension immobile des poses.

Gian Paolo Barbieri fascine, déconcerte, touche le cœur et l'esprit de celui qui regarde.

Et c'est aussi la fonction de la photographie et, plus largement, de l'art.

Accanto a molti capolavori di Barbieri, saranno esposte anche alcune fotografie inedite, che spaziano dagli anni ’60 agli anni 2000, frutto di un’approfondita ricerca condotta all’interno dell’archivio dell’Artista.

Gian Paolo Barbieri è riuscito a dare un volto unico alla moda italiana, che nessuno aveva ancora saputo immaginare, diventando complice e compagno di quegli stilisti che l’avvento del made in Italy avrebbe trasformato in protagonisti di una nuova era del costume e del fashion.

Al loro fianco, lui interpreta la stagione più bella di quella nuova effervescenza. In mostra scatti intimi e spontanei di modelle e celebrity come Veruschka, Naomi Campbell, Marpessa, Eva Herzigova, e Monica Bellucci, Mina, Isabella Rossellini si alternano ad iconiche fotografie (compresa Audrey Hepburn del 1969) che Barbieri ha concepito per alcune delle più leggendarie campagne pubblicitarie per brand di moda italiani e internazionali come Versace, Ferrè, Vivienne Westwood, Dolce & Gabbana, Valentino e Armani.

Ma il percorso espositivo propone al pubblico anche immagini innovative in termini di ambientazioni e styling, frutto dell’inconfondibile ingegno dell’Artista: una fotografia ironica e allo stesso tempo colta, ricercata e provocatoria, ricca di rimandi alla storia dell’arte, di eclettici set outdoor in location esotiche e citazioni cinematografiche, eco dell’esperienza giovanile fatta a Cinecittà, a Roma.

Dal suo punto di vista, infatti, la moda senza arte è nuda e vuota.

E qui le donne delle immagini in mostra si liberano per l’occasione delle pose più canoniche della fotografia di moda, per farsi portavoce di una nuova eleganza non convenzionale che ne rivela il lato più disinvolto e sensuale.

Barbieri - vincitore nel 2018 del premio Lucie Award come Miglior Fotografo di Moda Internazionale (Outstanding Achievement in Fashion) - è fotografo prezioso, sempre: nelle luci studiatissime e anche calibrato, attraverso l’antica familiarità col cinema e col teatro, nel trucco, nell’immobile sospensione delle pose.

Gian Paolo Barbieri affascina, sconcerta, tocca il cuore e la mente di chi guarda.

Ed è anche questa la funzione della fotografia e, più in esteso, dell’arte.

To the master who made his mark on the history of contemporary fashion photography, House of Lucie Ostuni and The Lucie Awards dedicate “Gian Paolo Barbieri: Beyond Fashion”, a retrospective exhibition realised in collaboration with the Gian Paolo Barbieri Foundation and 29 Arts In Progress Gallery, Milan which will be on view from the 5th of July to the 31st of August 2024.

Alongside many masterworks by Barbieri, there will also be shown some previously unpublished photographs ranging from the 1960’s to the year 2000, the product of in-depth research conducted inside the artist’s archive.

Gian Paolo Barbieri managed to give a unique perspective to Italian fashion that no one had yet imagined, becoming a friend and ally to the designers who the advent of made in Italy transformed into the protagonists of a new era of costume and fashion.

At their side, Barbieri interprets the most beautiful chapter of that new reawakening.

Shown in the exhibition are intimate and spontaneous shots of models and celebrities, such as Veruschka, Naomi Campbell, Marpessa, Eva Herzigova and Monica Bellucci, Mina, Isabella Rossellini alternating with iconic photographs (including Audrey Hepburn in 1969) which Barbieri conceived of for some of the most legendary publicity campaigns for Italian and International fashion brands such as Versace, Ferrè, Vivienne Westwood, Dolce & Gabbana, Valentino and Armani.

But the exhibition narrative also introduces the public to innovative images in terms of set design and styling, the product of the artist’s unmistakable genius: a style of photography which is ironic whilst at the same time cultured, sought after and provocative, rich with references to art history, eclectic outdoor set design in exotic locations and cinematic references echoing his early experience working at Cinecittà in Rome.

In fact, from Barbieri’s point of view, fashion without art becomes naked and empty.

The women photographed here in the exhibition free themselves for the occasion from the classic canonical poses of fashion photography, becoming spokeswomen for a new, unconventional type of elegance which reveals a more nonchalant and sensual side. Barbieri – the 2018 winner of the Lucie Award for Best International Fashion Photographer (Outstanding Achievement in Fashion) – is always a special photographer: in his carefully studied and balanced use of lighting, through his longstanding familiarity with cinema and theatre, in the makeup and the suspended stillness of the poses.

Gian Paolo Barbieri fascinates, surprises, touches the heart and mind of the viewer. This is also the purpose of photography and, more broadly, of art.
