Ernst Haas (1921, Wien – 1986, New York) ist einer der bedeutendsten Vertreter des Fotojournalismus und hat als Pionier der Farbfotografie unübertroffene Kunstwerke geschaffen. Der journalistische Blick und eine unverwechselbare Bildsprache haben seine Schwarz-Weiss-Aufnahmen über das Leben im zerstörten Nachkriegs-Wien zu einzigartigen Zeitdokumenten gemacht.
Allen voran zählt die bewegende Serie über die ersten Heimkehrer aus der russischen Kriegsgefangenschaft bis heute zu den wichtigsten Meilensteinen der Reportagefotografie.
Für Haas war sie der Auftakt zu einer beispiellosen Karriere. Nach seiner Emigration in die USA wurde er als erster Österreicher Mitglied und später Präsident der Fotoagentur Magnum und hat die Blütezeit der illustrierten Nachrichtenmagazine massgeblich mitgeprägt. Anfang der 1950er-Jahre entdeckte Haas die damals noch verpönte Farbfotografie für sich. Sein New York-Essay Images of a Magic City sollte die erste große Bildstrecke werden, die Life jemals in Farbe abgedruckt hat. 1962 ist er zudem der erste Farbfotograf, dem das Museum of Modern Art eine Einzelschau widmet.
In der umfassenden Werkschau präsentiert WestLicht rund 120 Arbeiten aus allen Schaffensperioden des Wiener Ausnahmefotografen. Eine Kooperation mit dem Ernst Haas Estate, mit zusätzlichen Leihgaben aus dem Museum der Moderne Salzburg, der Sammlung Fritz Simak und der Fotosammlung OstLicht.
Ernst Haas (1921, Vienne - 1986, New York) est l'un des plus grands représentants du photojournalisme et, en tant que pionnier de la photographie couleur, il a créé des œuvres d'art inégalées. Son regard journalistique et son langage visuel unique ont fait de ses clichés en noir et blanc sur la vie dans la Vienne détruite d'après-guerre des documents d'époque uniques.
La série émouvante sur les premiers rapatriés de la captivité russe compte jusqu'à aujourd'hui parmi les plus importants jalons de la photographie de reportage.
Pour Haas, elle a marqué le début d'une carrière sans précédent. Après son émigration aux États-Unis, il a été le premier Autrichien à devenir membre puis président de l'agence photographique Magnum et a largement contribué à l'âge d'or des magazines d'information illustrés. Au début des années 1950, Haas a découvert la photographie en couleur, encore mal vue à l'époque. Son essai sur New York, Images of a Magic City, deviendra la première grande série d'images jamais publiée en couleur par Life. En 1962, il est en outre le premier photographe couleur auquel le Museum of Modern Art consacre une exposition individuelle.
Dans cette vaste exposition, WestLicht présente environ 120 œuvres de toutes les périodes de création de ce photographe viennois d'exception. Une coopération avec le Ernst Haas Estate, avec des prêts supplémentaires du Museum der Moderne Salzburg, de la collection Fritz Simak et de la collection de photos OstLicht.

Il suo occhio giornalistico e l'inconfondibile linguaggio visivo hanno reso le sue fotografie in bianco e nero della vita nella Vienna distrutta del dopoguerra documenti unici dell'epoca.
Soprattutto, la commovente serie sui primi rimpatriati dalla prigionia russa è ancora oggi una delle pietre miliari della fotografia di reportage.
Per Haas è stato il preludio di una carriera senza precedenti. Dopo essere emigrato negli Stati Uniti, è stato il primo austriaco a diventare membro e poi presidente dell'agenzia fotografica Magnum e ha svolto un ruolo importante nel dare forma al periodo d'oro delle riviste di notizie illustrate. All'inizio degli anni Cinquanta, Haas scopre la fotografia a colori, all'epoca ancora malvista. Il suo saggio New York Images of a Magic City diventerà la prima grande serie di immagini che Life abbia mai stampato a colori. Ernst Haas (1921, Vienna - 1986, New York) is one of the most important representatives of photojournalism and, as a pioneer of color photography, created unsurpassed works of art. His journalistic eye and unmistakable visual language have made his black-and-white photographs of life in devastated post-war Vienna unique documents of the times.
Above all, the moving series about the first returnees from Russian captivity is still one of the most important milestones of reportage photography.
For Haas, it was the prelude to an unprecedented career. After emigrating to the U.S., he became the first Austrian to become a member and later president of the Magnum photo agency, and played a major role in shaping the heyday of illustrated news magazines. In the early 1950s, Haas discovered color photography, which was still frowned upon at the time. His New York essay Images of a Magic City was to become the first major series of pictures ever printed in color by Life. In 1962, he was also the first color photographer to have a solo show at the Museum of Modern Art.
In this comprehensive exhibition, WestLicht presents around 120 works from all creative periods of the exceptional Viennese photographer. A cooperation with the Ernst Haas Estate, with additional loans from the Museum der Moderne Salzburg, the Fritz Simak Collection and the photo collection OstLicht.
