Beate Gütschow. Widerstand, Flut, Brand, Widerstand.

Dystopische Situationen, bei denen Menschen an einem Abgrund stehen, menschenleere Landschaften, ausgestorbene Dörfer – bei den Bildern von Beate Gütschow wird erst auf den zweiten Blick deutlich, dass es sich um protestierende Menschenansammlungen, Überreste von zivilisatorischen Eingriffen nach einer Flutkatastrophe oder Spuren von Bränden in Wäldern und Landschaften handelt. Alle gezeigten Ereignisse haben in den letzten Jahren nicht irgendwo auf dem Globus, sondern in Deutschland stattgefunden.
Erst Wochen nach den Ereignissen kommt Beate Gütschow an jene Orte. In fotografischen Langzeitstudien entwickelt sie Gegenbilder zu den üblichen medial verbreiteten Katastrophendarstellungen. Es sind stillere Bilder, die einen emotionalen und analytischen Zugang ermöglichen. Gleichzeitig ist Gütschow Teil der Klimagerechtigkeitsbewegung: Hier dokumentiert sie teilnehmend und aufzeichnend Aktionen, Besetzungen und Demonstrationen – eine Innenperspektive, die sich zu tagebuchartigen Aufzeichnungen transformiert, die einerseits von Erlebnissen und Begegnungen vor Ort berichten, andererseits die politischen Rahmenbedingungen und den psychologischen Umgang mit der Erderhitzung reflektieren.
FOTO ARSENAL WIEN zeigt die erste Soloausstellung von Beate Gütschow in Wien vom 22.3. bis 23.6.2024 mit rund 100 Arbeiten, die in Kooperation mit der Klima Biennale Wien (5.4. bis 14.6.2024) stattfindet und von Felix Hoffmann, Artistic Director Foto Arsenal Wien, kuratiert wird.
Des situations dystopiques où les gens se tiennent au bord d'un gouffre, des paysages déserts, des villages éteints - dans les visuels de Beate Gütschow, ce n'est qu'au deuxième coup d'œil que l'on se rend compte qu'il s'agit de rassemblements de personnes qui protestent, de vestiges d'interventions de la civilisation après une inondation catastrophique ou de traces d'incendies dans les forêts et les paysages. Tous les événements montrés n'ont pas eu lieu n'importe où sur le globe ces dernières années, mais en Allemagne.
Ce n'est que plusieurs semaines après les événements que Beate Gütschow se rend sur ces lieux. Dans des études photographiques à long terme, elle développe des contre-images aux représentations habituelles des catastrophes diffusées par les médias. Il s'agit de visuels plus silencieux, qui permettent une approche émotionnelle et analytique. Parallèlement, Gütschow fait partie du mouvement pour la justice climatique : Elle y documente des actions, des occupations et des manifestations en y participant et en les enregistrant - une perspective intérieure qui se transforme en enregistrements sous forme de journaux intimes qui, d'une part, relatent des expériences et des rencontres sur place et, d'autre part, reflètent les conditions politiques générales et l'approche psychologique du réchauffement de la planète.
FOTO ARSENAL WIEN présente la première exposition solo de Beate Gütschow à Vienne du 22.3 au 23.6.2024 avec une centaine d'œuvres, en coopération avec la Klima Biennale Wien (5.4 au 14.6.2024) et sous le commissariat de Felix Hoffmann, directeur artistique de Foto Arsenal Wien.
Situazioni distopiche in cui le persone si trovano su un precipizio, paesaggi deserti, villaggi estinti: nelle immagini di Beate Gütschow diventa chiaro solo a un secondo sguardo che si tratta di assembramenti di persone in protesta, resti di interventi della civiltà dopo un disastro alluvionale o tracce di incendi in foreste e paesaggi. Tutti gli eventi mostrati hanno avuto luogo negli ultimi anni, non in tutto il mondo, ma in Germania.
Beate Gütschow visita questi luoghi solo settimane dopo gli eventi. In studi fotografici a lungo termine, sviluppa controimmagini rispetto alle consuete rappresentazioni mediatiche delle catastrofi. Si tratta di immagini più tranquille che consentono un approccio emotivo e analitico. Allo stesso tempo, Gütschow fa parte del movimento per la giustizia climatica: Qui documenta la partecipazione e la registrazione di azioni, occupazioni e manifestazioni - una prospettiva interna che viene trasformata in registrazioni simili a diari, che da un lato riportano le esperienze e gli incontri sul posto, e dall'altro riflettono le condizioni politiche generali e la gestione psicologica del riscaldamento globale.
FOTO ARSENAL WIEN presenta la prima mostra personale di Beate Gütschow a Vienna, dal 22 marzo al 23 giugno 2024, con circa 100 opere, che si svolge in collaborazione con la Biennale del Clima di Vienna (5 aprile - 14 giugno 2024) ed è curata da Felix Hoffmann, direttore artistico di Foto Arsenal Wien.
Dystopian situations with people standing on the edge of an abyss, landscapes devoid of humans, and deserted villages—it takes a second look to realize that these photographs depict crowds of protesters, remains of civilization-related interventions after flood disasters, or traces of fires that have ravaged forests and landscapes. These events did not take place just anywhere on the globe in the past years; they all happened in Germany.
Within weeks of the events, Beate Gütschow visited these places. In long-term photographic studies, she develops antitheses that counter the conventional images of catastrophes spread by the media. Her images are quieter, encouraging an emotional and analytical response. Gütschow is also part of the climate justice movement, documenting activities such as occupations and demonstrations as a participant and chronicler—an insider’s perspective—and transforming them into diary-like entries that tell of experiences and encounters on site as well as reflect on the political context and the psychological impact of global warming.
FOTO ARSENAL WIEN presents Beate Gütschow’s first solo exhibition in Vienna from March 22 to June 23, 2024, including around one hundred works. The show, held in cooperation with the Klima Biennale Wien (April 5 to July 14, 2024), is curated by Felix Hoffmann, artistic director of FOTO ARSENAL WIEN.
