Die jungen Menschen, die Stephen Shames Ende der 1970er Jahre in der besten Tradition der amerikanischen Dokumentarfotografie fotografiert, wurden in Amerika arm geboren, von Erwachsenen und Institutionen verlassen und der Gewalt der Gesellschaft zum Opfer gefallen. Stephen Shames wird ihr Sprecher. Durch seine Fotografien und deren Verbreitung, insbesondere in Form von Büchern mit einem engagierten Thema, beharrt er auf der Idee, dass Armut die Ursache aller sozialen Probleme und kriminellen Verhaltensweisen ist.
Die Fotos von Shames, die bis ins Erwachsenenalter ungeschützt projiziert werden, zeugen davon, ohne Pathos oder Inszenierung. Das soziale und politische Engagement des Fotografen, der seine Karriere in den 1960er Jahren als Kolumnist der Black Panther Party begann, wird in diesen oft über mehrere Jahre hinweg entstandenen Reportagen bekräftigt. Der Fotograf lebt an ihrer Seite und hält die dramatische Dichte ihres Alltags in Schwarzweißfotos voller Emotionen und roher Kraft fest.
Les jeunes que Stephen Shames photographie à la fin des années 70, dans le meilleur de la tradition photographique documentaire américaine sont nés pauvres en Amérique, abandonnés par les adultes et les institutions, en proie à la violence de la société. Stephen Shames devient leur porte parole. Par ses photographies et leur diffusion, en particulier sous forme de livres au propos engagé, il insiste sur l’idée que c'est la pauvreté qui est à l’origine de l’ensemble des problèmes sociaux et des comportements criminels.
Projetés dans l’âge adulte, sans protection, les très jeunes gens que Shames photographie en témoignent, sans pathos ni mise en scène. L’engagement social et politique du photographe, qui commence sa carrière dans les années 60 comme chroniqueur du Black Panther Party, s’affirme dans ces reportages, souvent réalisés sur plusieurs années. Le photographe vit à leur côté et enregistre la densité dramatique de leur quotidien, dans des photographies noir et blanc pleines d’émotion et de force brute.
The young people that Stephen Shames photographed in the late 1970s, in the finest tradition of American documentary photography, were born poor in America, neglected by adults and institutions, plagued by the violence of society. The social and political commitment of Stephen Shames, who began his career in the 1960s as a photographer for the Black Panther Party, is clearly seen in these reportages, often shot over several years.
Stephen Shames captures American youth through the prism of poverty and aims to be the voice of those who are not heard. Through his photographs and their diffusion, particularly in the form of illustrated essay books, he insists on the idea that poverty is the source to all social problems and criminal behaviour. Thrown into adulthood, unprotected, the extremely young people that Shames photographs show this, without any pathos or staging. The photographer stands beside them and records the dramatic density of their daily lives, in black and white photographs full of emotion and strength.
