Unter dem Titel Future Perfect zeigt FOTODOKS Fotoarbeiten von 13 internationalen Künstler*innen und Kollektiven, die sich mit den gegenwärtigen Bedingungen und Folgen des Klimawandels beschäftigen. Durch die Arbeiten werden zum einen zentrale Fragestellungen des Umweltschutzes in den Blick genommen; so etwa Herausforderungen der Endlagerung von Atommüll, die Folgen von Monokulturen und Massentierhaltung oder die Rolle der Baustoffindustrien. Andererseits setzen sich die Künstler*innen mit den gesellschaftlichen und sozialen Auswirkungen der globalen Erwärmung auseinander. Sie produzieren ein Bild der Gegenwart, das von Flucht und Diskriminierung genauso wie von Populismus und wachsendem Klimaaktivismus innerhalb der jüngsten Generationen geprägt ist. Mit dem Blick in alle Himmelsrichtungen – ob nach Brasilien, Australien oder Bangladesch, in die Dolomiten oder ins Ahrtal – es wird deutlich, dass Hochwasser, Dürre und Waldbrände in dramatischer Weise, aber längst nicht mehr nur, den Globalen Süden betreffen.
Die ausgestellten Werke zeugen von der großen Bandbreite aktueller fotografischer Ausdrucksformen. Es werden analoge Handabzüge, raumgreifende Installationen und Augmented-Reality-Technologien zu sehen sein. Neben dem thematischen Schwerpunkt vereint viele Arbeiten eine Dringlichkeit, Zukunftsvorstellungen neu zu formulieren. Zustände der Gegenwart, historische Informationen und Visionen des Kommenden werden durch die Künstler*innen aufgegriffen, abgeglichen und vermengt. Daraus resultieren Fragen, die sowohl die mediale Rolle der Fotografie ins Zentrum rücken, als auch vorrangig westliche Politiken und Handlungsmuster zur Debatte stellen: Wer werden wir gewesen sein? Ignorierten wir, längst mitten in der prognostizierten Klimakatastrophe zu stecken?
Das Prinzip der Regnose, also der Rückwärtsbefragung, könnte ein Impuls für Veränderung, für Wandel, für Umdenken sein. Diesen Fragen folgend wagen wir den Versuch, unsere Gegenwart von einer hypothetischen Zukunft aus zu betrachten. Die gesprochene und geschriebene Sprache erlaubt uns, dieses zeitliche Experiment durch die Verwendung der vollendeten Zukunft – im Deutschen “Futur 2” genannt; im Englischen „Future Perfect”. Lasst uns von einer abgeschlossenen Zukunft ausgehen.
Sous le titre Future Perfect, FOTODOKS présente les travaux photographiques de 13 artistes* et collectifs internationaux qui s'intéressent aux conditions actuelles et aux conséquences du changement climatique. Les travaux abordent d'une part des questions centrales de la protection de l'environnement, telles que les défis du stockage définitif des déchets nucléaires, les conséquences des monocultures et de l'élevage intensif ou le rôle des industries de matériaux de construction. D'autre part, les artistes* se penchent sur les conséquences sociales et sociétales du réchauffement climatique. Vous produisez un visuel du présent, marqué par la fuite et la discrimination tout autant que par le populisme et l'activisme climatique croissant au sein des plus jeunes générations. En regardant aux quatre coins du monde - que ce soit au Brésil, en Australie ou au Bangladesh, dans les Dolomites ou dans la vallée de l'Ahr - il apparaît clairement que les inondations, la sécheresse et les incendies de forêt touchent de manière dramatique, mais depuis longtemps déjà, le Sud mondial.
Les œuvres exposées témoignent de la grande diversité des formes d'expression photographiques actuelles. On pourra y voir des tirages manuels analogiques, des installations qui occupent tout l'espace et des technologies de réalité augmentée. Outre l'accent thématique, de nombreux travaux sont unis par l'urgence de reformuler des idées d'avenir. Les artistes reprennent, comparent et mélangent les états du présent, les informations historiques et les visions de l'avenir. Il en résulte des questions qui mettent l'accent sur le rôle médiatique de la photographie, mais qui transmettent aussi des débats sur les politiques et les modèles d'action occidentaux : Qui aurons-nous été ? Avons-nous ignoré que nous étions depuis longtemps au cœur de la catastrophe climatique annoncée ?
Le principe de la regnose, c'est-à-dire l'interrogation à rebours, pourrait être une impulsion pour le changement, pour la transformation, pour une nouvelle façon de penser. En suivant ces questions, nous osons tenter d'observer notre présent à partir d'un futur hypothétique. La langue parlée et écrite nous permet de faire cette expérience temporelle en utilisant le futur achevé - appelé "Futur 2" en allemand ; "Future Perfect" en anglais. Partons d'un futur achevé.
Con il titolo Future Perfect, FOTODOKS presenta opere fotografiche di 13 artisti e collettivi internazionali che si occupano delle condizioni attuali e delle conseguenze del cambiamento climatico. Da un lato, le opere si concentrano su questioni centrali della protezione ambientale, come le sfide dello stoccaggio definitivo delle scorie nucleari, le conseguenze delle monocolture e dell'agricoltura industriale o il ruolo dell'industria dei materiali da costruzione. Dall'altro lato, gli artisti affrontano gli effetti sociali e societari del riscaldamento globale. Producono un'immagine del presente segnata dalla fuga e dalla discriminazione, ma anche dal populismo e dal crescente attivismo per il clima delle generazioni più giovani. Guardando in tutte le direzioni - che si tratti del Brasile, dell'Australia o del Bangladesh, delle Dolomiti o della Valle dell'Ahr - diventa chiaro che le inondazioni, la siccità e gli incendi boschivi stanno colpendo drammaticamente, ma non sono più confinati al Sud globale.
Le opere esposte testimoniano l'ampia gamma di forme attuali di espressione fotografica. Saranno esposte impronte di mani analogiche, installazioni di grandi dimensioni e tecnologie di realtà aumentata. Oltre al focus tematico, molte opere sono accomunate dall'urgenza di riformulare nozioni sul futuro. Le condizioni attuali, le informazioni storiche e le visioni di ciò che verrà sono riprese, confrontate e mescolate dagli artisti. Ne derivano domande che si concentrano sul ruolo mediale della fotografia e mettono in discussione le politiche e i modelli di azione principalmente occidentali: Chi saremo stati? Abbiamo ignorato da tempo di trovarci nel bel mezzo della catastrofe climatica prevista?
Il principio della regnosi, cioè dell'interrogazione a ritroso, potrebbe essere un impulso al cambiamento, alla trasformazione, al ripensamento. Seguendo queste domande, osiamo provare a guardare il nostro presente da un ipotetico futuro. La lingua parlata e scritta ci permette di condurre questo esperimento temporale utilizzando il futuro compiuto - chiamato "future tense 2" in tedesco; "future perfect" in inglese. Partiamo da un futuro compiuto.
Under the title Future Perfect, FOTODOKS shows photographic works by 13 international artists and collectives that deal with the current conditions and consequences of climate change. On the one hand, the works focus on central issues of environmental protection, such as the challenges of nuclear waste disposal, the consequences of monocultures and factory farming, or the role of the building materials industries. On the other hand, the artists deal with the societal and social effects of global warming. They produce an image of the present that is characterized by flight and discrimination as well as populism and growing climate activism within the youngest generations. Looking in all directions - whether to Brazil, Australia or Bangladesh, to the Dolomites or to the Ahr Valley - it becomes clear that floods, drought and forest fires are dramatically affecting, but are no longer confined to, the Global South.
The exhibited works testify to the wide range of current photographic forms of expression. Analog hand prints, expansive installations, and augmented reality technologies will be on view. In addition to the thematic focus, many works are united by an urgency to reformulate notions of the future. Conditions of the present, historical information, and visions of what is to come are taken up, reconciled, and blended by the artists. This results in questions that both focus on the medial role of photography and put primarily Western policies and patterns of action up for debate: Who will we have been? Did we ignore being in the middle of the predicted climate catastrophe long ago?
The principle of regnosis, i.e. backward inquiry, could be an impulse for change, for transformation, for rethinking. Following these questions, we dare to try to look at our present from a hypothetical future. Spoken and written language allows us to conduct this temporal experiment by using the completed future - called "future tense 2" in German; "future perfect" in English. Let us assume a completed future.
