Das Nuku Photo Festival Ghana ist das erste Festival des Landes für fotografische Begegnungen, Austausch und Storytelling. Die vom Nuku Studio organisierte Veranstaltung findet vom 13. bis 21. September 2018 an verschiedenen Orten in Accra, Tamale, Wa und Kumasi statt. Das Festival bringt lokale und internationale Fotografen und bildende Künstler zusammen.
Das Festival soll einen Raum für künstlerische Erkundungen und Austausch bieten. Die teilnehmenden Künstler - sowohl etablierte als auch junge Talente - haben die einmalige Gelegenheit, ihre Arbeiten mit einem internationalen Publikum und ihren Kollegen zu teilen.
"Nuku Studio ist ein Raum, eine Institution, eine Gemeinschaft, die ein innovatives und produktives Unterstützungssystem für eine nachhaltige künstlerische und professionelle fotografische Praxis bietet. Wir haben das Gefühl, dass es an der Zeit ist, die Fotoszene in Ghana und im Ausland durch ein Fotofestival zu verbinden. Das Festival steht im Einklang mit der Vision von Nuku Studio, eine selbsttragende Fotocommunity und ein Netzwerk zu schaffen und zu entwickeln, und bietet Fotografen und bildenden Künstlern einen sicheren Raum, um sich zu treffen, zu experimentieren und auszutauschen, zu inspirieren und sich inspirieren zu lassen, herauszufordern und gefordert zu werden", sagt Nii Obodai, Gründer des Nuku Studio und Direktor des Nuku Photo Festivals.
Darüber hinaus laden die Organisatoren des Festivals das Publikum ein, die Kraft des Storytellings und die Kraft der Fotografie als Mittel zur Dokumentation und Stimulierung des gesellschaftlichen Wandels zu erleben und visuelle Geschichten aus Ghana, Afrika und darüber hinaus zu entdecken.
Wichtige Partner von Nuku Studio bei der Organisation des Festivals sind World Press Photo Foundation, Nubuke Foundation, Institut Français, Fondation Clément, Alliance Française Accra, Gallery 1957 und Noorderlicht (Haus der Fotografie in den Niederlanden).
Das Festival umfasst eine Vielzahl von Veranstaltungen - Ausstellungen, Kunstgespräche, Konferenzen, Portfolio-Reviews, Artist-in-Residence, Community-Events und vieles mehr. Zu den Ausstellungen gehören unter anderem Arbeiten ghanaischer Fotografen, eine Ausstellung mit einem Fotoprojekt über Nord-Ghana (produziert von Noorderlicht und Nuku Studio) in Tamale, eine Ausstellung über die African Photojournalism Database (von World Press Photo) und eine Ausstellung von James Barnor in der Gallery 1957 in Accra. Nuku Photo Festival Ghana is the country’s first festival for photographic encounters, exchanges, and story-telling. Organised by Nuku Studio, it will take place from 13 to 21 September 2018 across various venues in Accra, Tamale, Wa and Kumasi. The Festival will bring together both local and international photographers and visual artists.
The Festival is created to offer a space for artistic explorations and exchanges. The participating artists – both established ones and young talents – have a unique opportunity to share their work with an international audience and their peers.
“Nuku Studio is a space, an institution, a community that provides an innovative and productive support system for sustainable artistic and professional photographic practice. We feel, it is time to connect the photography scene in Ghana and abroad via a photo festival. The Festival is in line with Nuku Studio’s vision to create and grow a self-sustained photography community and network, and offer a safe space for photographers and visual artists to meet, experiment, and exchange, to inspire and be inspired, to challenge and be challenged,” says Nii Obodai, Founder of Nuku Studio and Director of Nuku Photo Festival.
Furthermore, the Festival organisers invite the audience to experience the power of story-telling and the power of photography as a means to document and stimulate societal change, and discover visual stories from Ghana, Africa and beyond.
Key partners of Nuku Studio in organising the festival include World Press Photo Foundation, Nubuke Foundation, Institut Français, Fondation Clément, Alliance Française Accra, Gallery 1957, and Noorderlicht (House of Photography in The Netherlands).
The Festival includes a variety of events – exhibitions, art talks, conferences, portfolio reviews, artist-in-residency, community events, and more. Exhibitions include, amongst others, works by Ghanaian photographers, an exhibition showcasing a photography project on Northern Ghana (produced by Noorderlicht and Nuku Studio) in Tamale, an exhibition on the African Photojournalism Database (by World Press Photo), and an exhibition by James Barnor at Gallery 1957 in Accra. The full programme will be announced in August.
