Das PhotoBrussels Festival wurde 2016 auf Initiative von Delphine Dumont im Hangar gegründet. Ziel des Festivals ist es, einen Monat lang alle Liebhaber, Akteure und Fachleute der zeitgenössischen Fotografie zusammenzubringen. Seit 2022 haben die Gründung des gemeinnützigen Vereins Photo Art et Culture ASBL und die Einrichtung eines Koordinierungsausschusses den Ruf und die Bedeutung des Festivals in Brüssel gestärkt.

Das PhotoBrussels Festival verleiht Brüssel seinen Platz als wichtiger Akteur in der internationalen Fotoszene und ist Teil des Europäischen Monats der Fotografie (EMOP), eines Netzwerks von Fotofestivals, das in verschiedenen europäischen Städten wie Berlin, Lissabon, Luxemburg, Paris, Wien und Brüssel vertreten ist. Das PhotoBrussels Festival empfängt ein lokales (Region Brüssel-Hauptstadt), belgisches und internationales (angrenzende Länder) Publikum, zusätzlich zu professionellen Fotografen, Sammlern und einem Publikum, das gerne Kunstgalerien und Kulturzentren besucht.

Das PhotoBrussels Festival ist der wichtigste Treffpunkt für Fotografie in Brüssel. Das Festival bietet den Besuchern einen Rundgang durch Ausstellungen in verschiedenen kulturellen Einrichtungen (Kunstgalerien, Museen, Kunstzentren...) innerhalb der belgischen Hauptstadt.

Créé en 2016 à l’initiative du Hangar par Delphine Dumont, PhotoBrussels Festival a pour objectif de réunir pendant un mois tous les amateurs, acteurs et professionnels de la photographie contemporaine. Depuis 2022, la création de l’ASBL Photo Art et Culture et la mise en place du comité de coordination ont permis de renforcer la réputation et l’importance du festival à Bruxelles.

PhotoBrussels Festival est un événement qui donne à Bruxelles sa place d’acteur incontournable de la scène photographique internationale et s’inscrit dans le cadre du Mois Européen de la Photographie (EMOP), un réseau de festivals de photographie présent dans différentes villes européennes telles que Berlin, Lisbonne, Luxembourg, Paris, Vienne et Bruxelles. Le PhotoBrussels Festival accueille un public local (Région Bruxelles-Capitale), belge et international (pays limitrophes), en plus des professionnels de la photographie, des collectionneurs et des publics amateurs de visites en galeries d’art et centres culturels.

PhotoBrussels Festival est le rendez-vous incontournable de la photographie à Bruxelles. Le Festival propose aux visiteurs un parcours d’expositions dans diverses structures culturelles (galeries d’art, musées, centres d’art…) au sein de la capitale belge.

Created in 2016 at the Hangar's initiative by Delphine Dumont, PhotoBrussels Festival aims to bring together all contemporary photography enthusiasts, players and professionals for a month. Since 2022, the creation of the ASBL Photo Art et Culture and the setting up of a coordinating committee have strengthened the festival's reputation and importance in Brussels.

PhotoBrussels Festival is an event that gives Brussels its place as a key player on the international photography scene, and is part of the European Month of Photography (EMOP), a network of photography festivals present in various European cities such as Berlin, Lisbon, Luxembourg, Paris, Vienna and Brussels. The PhotoBrussels Festival welcomes local (Brussels-Capital Region), Belgian and international (neighboring countries) audiences, as well as photography professionals, collectors and art gallery and cultural center visitors.

PhotoBrussels Festival is the must-attend event for photography in Brussels. The Festival offers visitors a tour of exhibitions in various cultural structures (art galleries, museums, art centers...) in the heart of the Belgian capital.

Das PhotoBrussels Festival wurde 2016 auf Initiative von Le Hangar ins Leben gerufen und hat zum Ziel, einen Monat lang alle Amateure, Akteure und Profis der Fotografie zusammenzubringen. PhotoBrussels Festival dient auch als Plattform für den Austausch, um Ideen zu generieren und zu konfrontieren. Das Festival bietet ein Programm mit Ausstellungen, Workshops, Vorträgen und Führungen.

Vom 26. Januar bis zum 26. Februar 2023 werden 35 Fotoausstellungen dem Publikum zum Besuch angeboten.

Für diese 7. Ausgabe des PhotoBrussels Festival besteht der Koordinierungsausschuss aus : Atelier Contraste, Box Galerie, CENTRALE for contemporary art, Contretype, L'Enfant Sauvage, Fondation A Stichting, Hangar, La Nombreuse.

In the Shadow of Trees

Ob als Einzelgänger in der Landschaft, umgeben von oder im Wettstreit mit seinen Artgenossen im Wald oder als Teil der menschlichen Aktivitäten - der Baum ist ein Thema von großer Relevanz für die zeitgenössische Fotografie.

Auch den Pionieren der Fotografie im 19. Jahrhundert entging nicht, dass die Deklinationen von Formen und Licht, die er so gut ausdrücken kann, die Grundstoffe der Fotografie sind. In der gesamten Kunstgeschichte wurde der Baum als explizites Symbol für Leben, Wachstum, jahreszeitlichen Tod und Resilienz verwendet.

Wenn der Baum als größter lebender Organismus, der manchmal mehrere Jahrtausende alt ist, oft das Emblem einer Region oder einer Kultur ist, dann ist er auch das Emblem einer Geisteshaltung. Das Bild, das das Objektiv enthüllt, ermöglicht es, den Charakter und die Emotionen des Künstlers zu erkennen.

Diese außergewöhnliche Vielfalt will der Hangar mit der Ausstellung In the Shadow of Trees widerspiegeln, die rund zwanzig Fotoprojekte umfasst. Die Ausstellung soll auch auf die entscheidende Rolle aufmerksam machen, die Bäume für das Leben und Überleben der Menschheit spielen. Im Jahr 2022 kann man die ökologische und umweltpolitische Dimension, die jeder künstlerischen Aussage zugrunde liegt, nicht ignorieren.

In the Shadow of Trees lädt einerseits dazu ein, die Energieströme einzufangen, die von diesen Kunstprojekten ausgehen, und die Art und Weise, wie sie sich auf Stimmung, Haltung und Verlangen auswirken. Andererseits ruft die Ausstellung dazu auf, sich bewusst zu machen, dass jedes Individuum auf diesem Planeten Erde in gewisser Weise im Schatten der Bäume lebt...

Zu dieser Hangar-Kuration gesellen sich die drei Gewinner der Ausschreibung, der Prize.

Solitaire dans le paysage, entouré ou en compétition avec ses semblables dans la forêt, intégré de près ou de loin aux activités humaines, l’arbre est un sujet d’une grande pertinence dans la photographie contemporaine.

Les déclinaisons de formes et de lumière qu’il exprime si bien, matières premières de la photographie, n’avaient pas non plus échappé aux pionniers de ce médium au 19ème siècle. Tout au long de l’histoire de l’art, l’arbre a été utilisé comme un symbole explicite de vie, de croissance, de mort saisonnière et de résilience.

Si l’arbre, plus grand organisme vivant, parfois multimillénaire, est souvent l’emblème d’une région ou d’une culture, il l’est aussi d’un état d’esprit. L’image révélée par l’objectif permet d’approcher une lecture du caractère et des émotions de l’artiste.

C’est cette extraordinaire diversité que le Hangar veut refléter à travers In the Shadow of Trees, une exposition rassemblant une vingtaine de projets photographiques. Celle-ci a aussi pour objectif d’alerter sur la place cruciale qu’ont les arbres dans la vie et la survie de l’humanité. En effet, en 2022, on ne peut ignorer la dimension écologique et environnementale sous-jacente à tout propos artistique.

In the Shadow of Trees invite d’une part à capter les flux d’énergie qui émanent de ces projets artistiques et la manière dont ils affectent l’humeur, l’attitude et les envies. D’autre part, l’exposition appelle à faire prendre conscience que chaque individu, sur cette planète Terre vit en quelque sorte, à l’ombre des arbres…

A cette curation Hangar s’ajoutent les trois lauréats de l’appel à projet, le Prize.

Solitario nel paesaggio, circondato o in competizione con i suoi simili nella foresta, integrato da vicino o da lontano nelle attività umane, l'albero è un soggetto di grande rilevanza nella fotografia contemporanea.

Le variazioni di forma e di luce che esprime così bene, le materie prime della fotografia, non erano sfuggite nemmeno ai pionieri di questo mezzo nel XIX secolo. Nel corso della storia dell'arte, l'albero è stato usato come simbolo esplicito di vita, crescita, morte stagionale e resilienza.

Mentre l'albero, il più grande organismo vivente, a volte vecchio di migliaia di anni, è spesso un emblema di una regione o di una cultura, è anche un emblema di uno stato d'animo. L'immagine rivelata dall'obiettivo ci permette di avvicinarci a una lettura del carattere e delle emozioni dell'artista.

È questa straordinaria diversità che l'Hangar vuole riflettere attraverso In the Shadow of Trees, una mostra che riunisce una ventina di progetti fotografici. Ha anche lo scopo di avvisarci del ruolo cruciale che gli alberi giocano nella vita e nella sopravvivenza dell'umanità. In effetti, nel 2022, non possiamo ignorare la dimensione ecologica e ambientale alla base di qualsiasi dichiarazione artistica.

In the Shadow of Trees ci invita da un lato a catturare i flussi di energia che emanano da questi progetti artistici e il modo in cui influenzano i nostri umori, atteggiamenti e desideri. D'altra parte, la mostra richiama la consapevolezza che ogni individuo su questo pianeta Terra vive, in un certo senso, all'ombra degli alberi...

Oltre a questa curatela Hangar, i tre vincitori del bando per progetti, il Premio.

Standing alone in the landscape, or surrounded by or competing with its peers in the forest, forming a distant or close part of human activities, the tree is a highly pertinent subject in contemporary photography.

The variations of forms and light that the tree expresses so well, in essence the raw materials of photography, did not escape the pioneers of this medium in the 19th century either. Throughout the history of art, the tree has been used as an explicit symbol of life, of growth, of seasonal death and resilience.

While the tree, the world’s largest living organism, sometimes surviving for thousands of years, is often the emblem of a particular region or culture, it is also a state of mind. The images revealed by the lens make it possible to gain an idea of the artist’s character and emotions.

It is precisely that extraordinary diversity that the Hangar aims to reflect through In the Shadow of Trees, an exhibition that brings together twenty photographic projects. The show also aims to shine a light on the crucial place that trees occupy in life and the influence they have on the survival of humankind. Indeed, in 2022 we can no longer ignore the ecological and environmental underlying all artistic work.

On the one hand, In the Shadow of Trees invites us to capture the flow of energy that emanates from these artistic projects and the way in which they affect our mood, attitude and desires. While on the other, the exhibition calls on us to become aware that every individual on this planet Earth, lives in some way in the shadow of trees…

To this Hangar curation are added the three winners of the call for projects, the Prize.

Das PhotoBrussels Festival, organisiert von Hangar, ist ein großes jährliches Treffen, das der Fotografie gewidmet ist und auf einem sinnvollen Thema basiert.

Eine Auswahl internationaler Fotografen und aufstrebender junger Künstler zeigt dem Betrachter, was die zeitgenössische Fotografie über unsere Zeit, ihre Kämpfe, Trends und Wünsche zu sagen hat. Zwischen 100 und 200 Fotografien von 15-20 verschiedenen Künstlern werden im Kunstzentrum Hangar in Châtelain, einem kosmopolitischen Kulturviertel im Herzen Brüssels, ausgestellt.

Das PhotoBrussels Festival dient auch als Austauschplattform, um Ideen zu wecken und zu konfrontieren. Die Ausstellung ist museal angelegt und bietet die Möglichkeit, Vorträge, Workshops und Führungen zu organisieren, zu denen einige wichtige Akteure (Fotografen, Schriftsteller, Kunstschulen) eingeladen sind.

Auch in diesem Jahr wird wieder eine ganze Fototour "Parcours PBF" der Öffentlichkeit angeboten. Das Ziel des PhotoBrussels Festivals ist es, in ganz Brüssel und dann national und international zu strahlen, weshalb das Festival die Teilnahme von Galerien und Kulturzentren begrüßt!

PhotoBrussels Festival, organisé par Hangar, est une grande rencontre annuelle consacrée à la photographie, autour d'un thème significatif.

Une sélection de photographes internationaux et de jeunes artistes émergents montre aux spectateurs ce que la photographie contemporaine a à dire sur notre époque, ses luttes, ses tendances et ses aspirations. Entre 100 et 200 photographies, réalisées par 15-20 artistes différents, sont exposées dans le centre d'art Hangar, situé à Châtelain, un quartier culturel cosmopolite au cœur de Bruxelles.

PhotoBrussels Festival sert également de plateforme d'échange pour susciter et confronter des idées. Conçue à l'échelle d'un musée, l'exposition permet d'organiser des conférences, des ateliers et des visites guidées auxquels sont conviés des acteurs majeurs (photographes, écrivains, écoles d'art).

Cette année encore, toute une tournée photographique "Parcours PBF" sera proposée au public. L'objectif de PhotoBrussels Festival est de rayonner à travers Bruxelles, puis au niveau national et international, afin que le festival accueille la participation des galeries et centres culturels !

PhotoBrussels Festival, organised by Hangar, is a major annual meeting devoted to photography, based on a meaningful theme.

A selection of international photographers and emerging young artists shows viewers what contemporary photography has to say about our time, its struggles, trends and aspirations. Between 100 and 200 photographies, by 15-20 different artists, are exhibited in the Hangar art center, located in Châtelain, a cosmopolitan cultural district in the heart of Brussels.

PhotoBrussels Festival also serves as an exchange platform to spark and confront ideas. The exhibit is designed on the scale of a museum, and it provides an opportunity to organise lectures, workshops and guided tours where some major players (photographers, writers, art schools) are invited to attend.

This year again, an entire photographic tour "Parcours PBF" will be offered to public. The objective of PhotoBrussels Festival is to radiate throughout Brussels and then nationally and internationally, so the festival welcomes the participation of galleries and cultural centres!

PhotoBrussels Festival is open to the public for one month.

Brussels Street Photography Festival

The Brussels Street Photography Festival (BSPF) is a cultural project whose objective is to promote street photography as an urban research tool, a form of cultural communication and a visual art. The main ambition of the BSPF is to delve deeper into those visual elements that define the contemporary identity of Brussels in two dimensions, from a local and a global perspective.

Street photography’s popularity is constantly growing, gaining more enthusiasts and forming stronger communities around the world. The BSPF aims to bring together the views of both established and emerging street photographers by offering a larger exposure to the general public, creating awareness and engaging new enthusiasts.
