Wright Morris (1910-1998) est l’un des premiers à expérimenter le dialogue entre texte et image dans ses créations, dès les années 1940. Les essais de Wright Morris couvrent un large spectre de sujets et d’époques : des photographies historiques d’Eugène Atget à celles de l’espace prises par la NASA en passant par les portraits de pionniers dans l’Ouest américain de Solomon D. Butcher, les écrits de Susan Sontag et Henry James, ainsi qu’à travers ses propres photographies et écrits.
